Am I allowed to use Notion AI for my essays?
With the increased prominence—and controversy—of generative AI, many companies and organizations have taken notice. Some medical schools may even require you to sign and confirm you didn’t use AI to generate your responses.
So, while one ultimately uses AI at their own discretion and judgment, we believe Notion AI can be a tool that assists in the organization and clarification of your own ideas. This July, MIT published the first study examining the productivity effects of generative AI, revealing an “Industrial Revolution-level large” efficiency gain of 37% or more, with a noted increase in quality.
While we’re convinced the question will soon change from “if we should use generative AI” to “how we should use generative AI” in universities and hospitals alike, right now it’s understandably a gray area. With that said, we believe Notion AI can be utilized to clarify what you’re trying to say and the stories you’re trying to tell; to reduce redundancies in your writing to meet word counts while retaining your essay’s essence; suggestions for more effective ways to phrase repeated ideas.
Notion AI should NOT be used (or trusted) for the creation of original ideas from scratch, rewriting others’ material, or citing facts, statics, research etc. Notion AI should enhance you, not replace you.
After writing our response above, we asked Notion to condense our message into 100 words or less:

Our thoughts:
While the tone became noticeably more detached (as summaries tend to do), it gave us resources on how we could more succinctly communicate our original ideas above. From this example, we would:
- Consider using the phrase “usage disclosure” to communicate our first paragraph
- Consider using its description of AI as “an asset for refining your ideas”
- Consider the suggested phrase: a shift from “if” to “how” to employ generative AI
We would not:
- Remove the quotes from “Industrial Revolution-level” as we weren’t the ones that first used that phrase.
- Wouldn’t shorten our last sentence in the way suggested, in order to retain our personal writing style.

Notion AI is actually free for you to use, even right now, so you can test its capabilities before considering a purchase. However, once you’ve used all your complimentary AI responses, you’ll see a message requiring a subscription for continued use.
A subscription for Notion AI costs $10 a month, when added to any paid Notion plan, with the cheapest plan being $10 a month as well.
